CASE STUDY

RAF Coningsby

RAF Coningsby is home to extremely loud Typhoon units so the control room required sound attenuating glazing of a particularly high specification. TEX ATC was allowed to obtain the acoustic footprint of the Eurofighter in order to identify the levels of sound attenuation required.

TEX Maxiview Glazing was selected, and a bespoke laminated build-up was used to achieve optimal light transmission. The design incorporated a series of vibration absorbing Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) interlayers to attenuate at the required frequency.

Given the pace of the resident RAF Typhoon aircraft, field of view was paramount for monitoring and tracking. The design adopted oversized glazing panels using a single panel per facet resulting in only 8 fine glazing joints. This was further enhanced with the unique positioning of the support columns to the rear of the control room with a lightweight cantilevered roof system. The combination of these design elements resulted in a 280⁰ uninterrupted field of view of the entire airfield.
